Coaching Competencies

The International Coaching Federation (ICF) developed a list of 11 skills or competencies that any coach should develop.  We will be working with all these competencies directly or indirectly during our training program for spiritual coaching.

At least in the USA, and perhaps internationally, the word "coach" is not a regulated or controlled term in the way that "counselor" or "accountant" or "doctor" or "massage therapist" would be.    Technically, anyone can simply call himself or herself a "coach."  There is no evidence to suggest that anytime in the foreseeable future this will change.  In other words, anyone can just call themselves a "coach" or a "life coach" or a "spiritual coach" or any other variation.

Because there has been such a wide range of people of various levels of skill putting themselves forward as coaches, a movement began in the USA by a number of coaches.  They appointed themselves to be a credentialing agency -- the International Coaching Federation (ICF).   This is NOT an accrediting body in the way that schools, colleges and universities have government-recognized accrediting bodies.  This is a group of coaches coming together to form an organization, which over time has become more and more influential.   Many coaching schools now feel that they will not get students unless they present themselves as "ICF approved" and be willing to financially share with ICF in the revenue stream they get from tuitions.

There are many good things that ICF has done -- most notably to create a set of 11 competencies that any training program needs to address.  A link to that list -- with a brief description of each competency -- is shown below.

We are going to be addressing directly and indirectly these competencies in our Edgar Cayce China spiritual coach training program.   But we are not running our program through ICF for several reasons:  to keep costs more affordable, their lack of interest in the Cayce material, and the fact that complete coverage of all 11 competencies would take more time than what we can put into the initial 6 modules.   Anyone training to be an effective spiritual coach needs to look upon their training as an ongoing process of getting better and better.  No certification from any agency or federation makes you a good coach; your skill and effectiveness is something that clients will be able to feel and experience from you.
